Like so many of us, most of my life was filled with diets and the constant pursuit of shrinking. I can remember being told as early as 8 that I should lose weight – in fact, that I, “had a cute figure, and would be so attractive if I just lost a few.” I struggled for years, believing that it all had to be difficult.
The one time I successfully lost weight and kept it off in high school was the 6 months I wasn’t thinking about it. I was so sick of logging every morsel I ate and step I took that I scrapped the plan, did what I wanted to do, and felt infinitely better. “This can’t be right, though,” I thought, “because I didn’t stick to the plan…or even have one.”
I remember so well what it was like to hope that the next plan was the one. To be so sure that I’d find happiness and success with the right fad. And to believe, to the very core, that, because I hadn’t yet found the plan that worked and made me finally love my body, that I was a failure.
I remember equally well the time I got so tired of failing that I decided to break up with my constant companion: the shame cycle. You know her; she’s the voice in your head that reminds you that you’ve already messed up and stepped off the plan, so you might as well finish the pizza and make some cookies and get back on it again tomorrow. And when tomorrow comes, she’s right there with you, whispering in your ear how worthless you are, because you never finish that diet or exercise program or anything at all that you start.
The path to freedom begins with this breakup (ah, like so many do). When we decide that we could never lose another pound again, as long as we get our lives back, we begin to take back our power.
We’ve stifled the voices of our deepest selves, telling that dynamic, wise force to put away the bikini, avoid the birthday cake, forgo new experiences, hold back, and stay quiet until we’re small (and, therefore, good) enough.

The coaching process looks different for each person I work with, but we begin with a lot of questions. I like to know who you are, what’s important to you, what your preferences are, and what you’ve been doing up to now.
Once we have a detailed snapshot of where you are and where you’ve been, we work together to find what will be most fulfilling for you. I design a plan for you that works with your real life, not one for which you have to give up everything important to you. We’ll examine your habits, one by one, and allow the space for you, in your infinite wisdom, to try new things, to restore your trust in yourself, and to build the body and the life that you want.
